Women’s cross-country shocks state with second-place finish

Published on Nov. 29, 2015 for The HUB: I covered my high school women’s cross-country team’s second-place finish at the California state meet, in which they nearly pulled off an improbable upset over a perennial state power. Adding to the drama of the story was that the team’s top runner, a two-time individual state champion, had been injured for most of the season and hadn’t competed in months. Though still hobbled by tendinitis and hardly training, she raced to score points and finished eighth in California. The team ended up placing second in the country the following week at the national championship meet.
